Philippians 4:10-23

Introduction to Philippians

Paul is in prison, probably in Rome in 60AD and he’s writing a letter to the church in Philippi. Acts 16 tells us of Paul’s first journey to Philippi where Lydia became a Christian, a demon-possessed girl was freed, and the town jailer famously asked, “What must I do to be saved?” He and his family trusted in Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Go read Acts 16 and imagine some of those people now in the church in Philippi, listening to Paul’s letter being read out.

Starter Question: What is my ‘go to’ thing/place/activity to feel secure and content?

Q1. What is Paul’s secret to being content in every situation (v11-13)?

Q2. Look at v14-18, in what ways did the early Christians show their love and unity?

Q3. How is God described in v19-20, what is true about him?

Q4. Paul began the letter addressing the Philippians as saints, reminding them of their new status in Christ and talking about God’s grace. He ends in the same way. How is the fact that we are saints, member of Gods family, and knowing Jesus’ grace, encourage us with what we are facing today?

Personal reflection:

  • Am I looking for contentment in the wrong places? How can I know God’s strengthening in different situations in my life?
  • Are there Christians you know that are in need? How could you help? Could you find out about the needs of Christians in a different country and find a way to support them?
  • How will the knowledge that Jesus gives his grace to you every day change how you respond, think or act today?
