Psalm 8

Psalm 8

For the director of music. According to gittith.[b] A psalm of David.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
    in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?[c]

You have made them[d] a little lower than the angels[e]
and crowned them[f] with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their[g] feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Questions

Question 1:

What is your favourite thing that God has created? Maybe it’s family or friends? Maybe it’s a certain animal? Or the sea or the stars?

Question 2:

Why does God care for humans so much?

David sees the stars in the sky and how amazing they are, along with the rest of creation and he asks “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human begins that you care for them?” v4

In comparison to the vastness, greatness of the stars, humans seem unimportant. The stars live for much longer than humans, they don’t cause wars and hurt one another like humans do. Humans seem weak and fragile in comparison. So what is so great about humans?

Well, we can have a relationship with God – the one who flung the stars into space. We can know him, love him and worship him – having a personal relationship with him. And don’t forget that God made us in his image, take a look at Genesis 1:26-27 to read more about that. This sets us apart, makes us different from the rest of creation.

Question 3:

What responsibilities do humans have over creation?

Question 4:

After reading this Psalm, list a few things you think are amazing about God.

Question 5:

What does this psalm tell us about how God sees humans?

Pray: Thank you God, that you made us in your image and you love us. Thank you that we can have a personal relationship with you.
